Beastly
My new painting titled "beastly". There are various layers involved in this piece. At first the background was a very simple palette of colors ranging from the yellows and greens. I kept it relatively primary. I used a large brush to quickly fill in the canvas and i applied a medium layer of paint and I mixed the colors on the canvas. After that layer was dried up I started applying some drawing elements to bring out a certain graphic quality. I was almost satisfied with just the background layer but I had a design in mind so I had to take my chanced and just paint over the background. Sometimes I hate doing this because I feel like I am taking a big chance. I started to draw a simple skeletal image of a character of some sort. I didn't make a sketch of it so I had to wing it. It was initially a rib cage type image and underneath it it had some colorful organs that represented the characters lungs, liver, heart, intestines and brain, but I used a very watered down green and blue washes and just painted over them. My intention was to create a skin layer for this so called "beast". From this point onwards I had to do some pushing and pulling because there were some areas that I regretted washing over. There were also some moments of hesitation because I had some left over paint and I thought it would be a waste to not use them so I just went ahead and used it. Instant regret! Man, if I was not so stingy I would have not made this mistake!!! Anyways, I wanted to add some texture to the painting so I applied some viscous, thick paint. You can take a detailed look at the very last image with the white and red. This element of the painting was pretty much taken from a Jonathan Lasker Painting. The thick sculptural elements above are something that I have been experimenting with.
My influences for this piece is first and foremost my friend and awesome artist Racer Levan. You can take a look at his art work at:
