Whacky Arcade Sports Game: Numan Athletics 2
Here is a video of a really whacky arcade sports game. Back in the wild west of 90's arcade gaming, where you would walk into a cigarette scented, semi underground bunker of a building, at times with air condition and at times with some dainty fans. One would often come across that one arcade machine that had a sports game, while everything else was either fighting, racing or shooting. These sports games were practically button mashers that were designed to eat up your coins while it gave you very limited attempts at each event. You would be lucky if you were even able to lift your wrists after one of the sprinting events, after successively alternating between pressing the A and B button for about the 100th time during the, maybe 5 second time frame. These types of games were niche even amongst the alternative arcade crowd, and it was actually quite rare to locate on of these unless you went to a really big one. However the game that I am spotlighting, I have not yet seen before. I may have seen a variant of it in terms of ridiculousness, but I have not come across one that was so vibrant. Each sporting event is so over the top and very subtly hints at story elements, which give you clues as to what kind of world these characters are set in. I mean, when you are pulling giant kaiju across a distance, and throwing giant missiles across cities, then you get somewhat of an idea. The animation and character design is really beautiful, and the sense of scale and speed is really quite fascinating considering the game is 2D sprites, and it was created in 1994.
My favorite events:
Monster Drag
Bomb's Away
Deep Diver
Ground Spike
