I don't know what you call those 80's robot glossy. shiny illustration style, but this piece is an homage to that super shiny style. My robots are usually very flat so I don't think the super shiny style really takes full effect. To successfully make this effect work there needs to be various extremes of light and dark colors. There is a gratuitous amount of black and white and then each color that is picked for the illustration/animation has three tones for each main color. (light tone, mid tone, dark tone.)
Even with all the right tools you still need to have a certain approach with the drawing where the areas of the lights and colors are very free flowing. Below are some good examples of this super shiny style.


I remember 'Dancougar' specifically for using this style very gratuitously. 


This is a still image from the video game 'Transformers Devastation'. This video game does an excellent job emulating the classic animation opening sequences of the bygone days or the super robots. 

  

This is the opening for the 'Silver Hawks' cartoon. The animation is really cool even for todays standards. I only watched a few episodes as a kid, and they were dubbed in Korean.
